Installation

Which systems does Zalmaya run on?
Zalmaya is a desktop app for Windows and macOS. The exact system requirements will be given on the download page with the first release. The piano display uses your computer's graphics acceleration (WebGL).
Where can I download Zalmaya safely?
Only from this website's download page. Do not install a version found elsewhere: it could have been modified.
Do I need an account to use Zalmaya?
No. All free features are available from the first launch, without an account. An account lets you back up your progress online and use Premium.
Windows or macOS shows a warning during installation.
The installers are not yet signed with an Apple or Microsoft certificate, so a warning may appear on first launch. On Windows, click “More info”, then “Run anyway”. On macOS, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, then “Open Anyway”. Only do this for a file downloaded from the download page, whose SHA-256 fingerprint you can check.
How do I update Zalmaya?
New versions are published on the download page; their content is described in the changelog.

Sign-in and account

How do I create an account?
With your email address and a password of at least 10 characters, with an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter and a digit. Zalmaya sends you a 6-digit code by email to confirm your address. You can also sign in with Google.
I did not receive the confirmation code.
Check your spam folder. The code is valid for one hour; you can request a new one after a minute. If nothing arrives, check the spelling of your address.
I forgot my password.
Choose “Forgot your password?” on the sign-in screen. You will receive a code by email that lets you choose a new password.
Is my account the same in the app and on the website?
Yes. There is only one Zalmaya account: you sign in with the same credentials everywhere, and your Premium subscription follows you.
I signed up by email, then signed in with Google. Do I have two accounts?
No, if the address is the same and has been confirmed: the Google sign-in is attached to your existing account.
How do I export my data or delete my account?
From the Account page in the app: “Export my data” and “Delete my account”. For security, deletion requires a recent sign-in. If a subscription is running, cancel it first so you are no longer charged.

MIDI keyboards

How do I connect my MIDI keyboard?
Connect your keyboard over USB, then open Settings › Controls in Zalmaya. Choose MIDI piano as the input source, select your device, then your keyboard size (25 to 88 keys).
My keyboard is not detected.
Plug in the keyboard before launching Zalmaya, or restart the app after plugging it in. Close other music software that might be using it at the same time. On macOS, MIDI keyboard support is still being validated.
Some notes are not picked up.
Notes outside the selected range are ignored. Check that the keyboard size in Settings › Controls matches your instrument; you can test each key live.
The sound lags behind my keys.
Adjust the Latency offset in Settings › Audio. Also check that the right Audio output is selected.
I don't have a MIDI keyboard.
You can play with your computer keyboard: choose Keyboard as the input source and customise the keys in Settings › Controls. Lessons can also be played with the mouse.

MIDI files

How do I import a piece?
In the Library, choose Import a MIDI and select a .mid or .midi file. The title is taken from the file name; you can then edit the details and add a cover.
Where can I find MIDI files?
Zalmaya does not provide a catalogue: you import your own files. Respect copyright; many classical works are in the public domain.
The hands are split badly in my piece.
Zalmaya automatically splits the notes between left and right hand on import. Files that put each hand on a separate track give the best results.
How does automatic import work?
With Premium, link a folder in Settings › Storage: new MIDI files placed there join your library, at startup or on demand. On macOS, this feature is still being validated.

Features

What is the difference between Practice and Performance?
Practice is for learning a piece: adjustable speed, wait-for-notes, virtual hands. Performance has you play the whole piece and scores it: score, combo, accuracy and rank.
How do I show the virtual hands?
Turn them on in Settings › Display (Virtual hands), along with finger numbers, their opacity and hint intensity. They appear in Practice mode when a fingering could be computed for the piece.
How do I repeat a passage?
With Premium, use the A–B loop in the playback bar: set point A, then point B, and turn the loop on.
How do I switch between the 3D and 2D views?
During a session, open the settings panel: Playfield view offers the immersive 3D view or the classic 2D view. Your choice is kept.
The game stutters on my computer.
In Settings › Display, lower the Render quality cap, turn off Bloom glow or Impact particles, and set an FPS limit.

Subscriptions

What plans are available?
Premium comes as a monthly subscription, a yearly subscription and a one-time “lifetime” purchase. Prices (VAT included) and the full feature list are on the Premium page.
How do I buy Premium?
From the website's Premium page or from the Premium screen in the app, with your Zalmaya account. Payment takes place on the secure page of Stripe, our reseller, through its Link service. Zalmaya never sees your bank details.
How do I use a promo code?
On the Stripe payment page, click “Add promotion code” before confirming. The discount appears in the total immediately.
I paid but Premium is not active.
Premium activates as soon as Stripe confirms the payment to our servers, usually within a few seconds; the app and the confirmation page check automatically. If nothing changes, use “Restore my purchases” in My account › Subscription or in the app, signed in with the account that made the purchase.
How do I cancel or change my payment method?
With “Manage my subscription”, in My account › Subscription or in the app: it opens your Stripe customer area. After cancelling, Premium stays active until the end of the paid period.
Where can I find my invoices?
Stripe, our reseller, emails you a receipt for each payment. You can also find the history in your Stripe customer area (“Manage my subscription”) and on link.com.
My payment was declined.
For a renewal, new attempts are made automatically and Premium stays active in the meantime. Update your payment method with “Manage my subscription”. For a first purchase, try again with another payment method: nothing is charged until the payment is accepted.
On how many computers can I use Premium?
Two at a time. Beyond that, the app offers to free up an old computer's slot.
Can I get a refund?
See the refund policy.

Technical issues

I can't hear any sound.
Instrument sounds are downloaded on first use: an Internet connection is needed at that moment. Then check the volume and the Audio output in Settings › Audio.
The app shows “Check required”.
Your computer's clock seems to have been turned back. Set the correct date and time, then connect to the Internet so Zalmaya can verify your licence.
The app shows “Verification required”.
Premium works for up to 14 days offline. After that, connect to the Internet: Premium resumes as soon as it is verified. Free features remain available in the meantime.
My progress has disappeared.
Without an account, progress is saved only on your computer. Sign in and link your progress to your account to back it up and find it on another computer.
